Electronic Targets at Mosman-Neutral Bay Rifle Club
New Electronic Targets
Mosman-Neutral Bay Rifle Club has taken possession of its new Electronic Targets for use in Club Shoots beginning from the first Saturday in July 2008. The targets are manufactured by Kongsberg Mikroelektronikk in Norway and are the same as those installed at Swanbourne Range in Perth.
The Club will be using 2 sets of targets for the normal distances at ANZAC in Sydney of 300 to 800 metres.
Some modification to the target frames was needed to accommodate the targets and the Club has been allocated F9 and FX for each week’s shooting so that there is no requirement to set up or move the frames each week.
The targets use ultra-sonic sensors to calculate the position of the shot, and communicate with the mound via wireless modems that give the shooter almost instantaneous feedback about the shot fired on the easy-to-operate display monitor. The target systems at both the Mound and Butts are powered by rechargeable batteries.
After some initial setting up to assemble and prepare the targets for use, the Club put up oneof the new targets for Club Members to practice on at the last 800 metre range. A number of members used the targets for the afternoon shoot and a large amount of interest was shown by other clubs in their operation. At the end of the day, all those shooting on the new targets were pleased with the results and found the transition from telescope to monitor of little concern.
The Club feels that by promoting the use of the latest technology in Fullbore Target Shooting, it will add to the interest in, and long-term perpetuation of the sport. The Club hopes that after a successful period of operation, other clubs and associations will see the advantages and take up the challenge.
